One of the most important and efficient handling improvements to the rear suspension of an MGB you can make, is fitting a panhard rod between the chassis and the rear axle.
We have developed a cost efficient kit, which consists of a custom chassis bracket, a stiff, rose-jointed rod, together with a light-weight alloy axle bracket.
Installation requires the drilling of three holes, but is virtually undetectable. The whole installation process can be done in less than one hour, using just a few hand-tools.
The improvements in cornering ability are immediately felt, with a flat attitude through high-speed corners, especially those with bumps in them, as the reduction in bump-steer is tremendous.
Other advantages include the possibility to "adjust" away the built-in error found in most MGB's: The fact that the rear axle is located 1/2 to 3/4 inches to the left. This will also enable you to mount wider tyres at the rear, for better looks and possibly better handling. However, doing this will add a static load on the system and your chassis may not be able to cope with the added stress. See the following note.
NOTE: Since the chassis bracket attaches to the bottom corner of the boot and will be taking up quite a bit of load, you MUST make sure that this area is sound, i.e. solid steel and no "gruyere cheese" panels. Besides, you love your MG, so why would you let it rust to bits anyway?
Also, make sure you "level" the rod. It should be perfectly level to mother earth, with the car under its normal load and on its wheels. You check this using a common builders leveler and with someone in the car. If you carry a passenger most of the time, stick a person in that seat as well, before making the adjustments.
